  1. A marine mammal Dugong dugong of the order
  2. Sirenia (sea cows), found in the Red Sea, the
  3. Indian Ocean and W Pacific. It can grow to
  4. 3.6 m/11 ft long, and has a tapering body
  5. with a notched tail and two fore-flippers. It
  6. is herbivorous, feeding on sea grasses and
  7. seaweeds. It may have given rise to the
  8. mermaid myth.
